Southampton vs. Chelsea score
Chelsea slumped to a second league defeat despite big summer spending.
The pressure is back on Thomas Tuchel, the Chelsea manager with a team that is getting bigger – and more expensive than ever – while performances are slipping, now in the Premier League before the end of August. Handed their second defeat of the season.
Perhaps Wesley Fofana will make a difference when, if expected, his arrival will push Chelsea’s summer spending into the region of £280m on transfer fees alone, although it feels like bigger issues. There are other places besides defense. This isn’t a Chelsea team with the back door closed by any means but it is in attack where they seem to lack a focal point – a big threat that doesn’t seem able to capitalize.
In fact, he played the last 30 minutes of that game with Armando Bruja, a boy from Salvo’s Albanian academy leading the line against the team he played on loan against last season. It didn’t seem like a bad idea at times, although it wasn’t what Todd Bohly might have had in mind when the man who led the big private equity money that now owns Chelsea embarked on an epic summer of acquisitions. .
Tuchel wasn’t as composed afterwards as the German often is in tense moments, shrugging off questions about attacking options with some irritation and then failing to stop himself from criticizing his players. “It’s very easy to derail us,” he said, “very easy to bully us.” He said the absence of many players such as the injured N’Golo Kante and Reece James, due to illness before the game, affected his team. There were only 16-foot players in training on Monday, he complained. What could this portend for Chelsea’s new owners in the final days of this transfer window apprenticeship? Their marquee signing Raheem Sterling scored his third goal in two games to give Chelsea the lead, and yet by the end he had moved into a wider role more familiar to him for the rest of his career. In Germany, Timo Werner had a first-half hat-trick for RB Leipzig although, with the caveat, it came against lower league opposition in the cup.
While the Chelsea manager looked defiant, and was forced into a wholesale system change with about 25 minutes remaining, it was a triumphant night for the ever somber Ralf Hessenhuttel. The Southampton manager, who always seems to have two defeats to clean out his locker, galvanized his eager runners, and some of his young summer signings, for a famous victory. In the end the Austrian coach spent a lap of the pitch some of the great tension he seems to be carrying.
A number of excellent performances in this Southampton side, including the first goal for Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia, were summer signings from Manchester City’s vast reservoir of young talent. The 18-year-old got the equalizer before Adam Armstrong scored the winner just before half-time. Lavia was injured in the second half and Hessen Huttle later said it would be a “longer” absence than expected. Defender in blue. His partnership with Mohamed Salisu was assured, and there was energy all over the pitch.
The victory lifted Hessen Hittle’s side to seventh in the Premier League, one place ahead of Chelsea. By the end Tuchel had changed his formation to a back three and sent Ben Chelwell and Christian Pulisic as wing-backs, to little effect. He lost Ruben Loftus-Cheek to injury at half-time and was replaced by Mateo Kovacic, who was told by Tuchel that he was not fit himself.

Chelsea had all the possession in the second half as they went in search of an equaliser, with two crucial goalmouth clearances from Marc Cucorella and then Thiago Silva to deny Southampton a third goal. James’ absence meant that captain Cesar Azpilicueta made his 450th Chelsea appearance and was by no means at his best. The right flank was a problem for Chelsea all night, and both goals were rooted in this part of the pitch.
It must be said that in these early stages, the crispness of some of Chelsea’s conversions was extraordinary. On 23 minutes Kai Howertz and Mason Mount opened up a pack of space and Sterling’s cross was first blocked by Romain Perrad. With his back to goal and the ball at his feet, Sterling knew there were plenty of goals behind him to aim for – he showed courage to turn and find space.
The equalizer came when Azpilicueta’s weak clearance from a corner went to Lavia whose right-footed shot curled around Mount and Kalidou Koulibaly, past Edouard Mendy’s left hand and just inside his post. Before Adam Armstrong’s second, Azpilicueta had already beaten a ball well into the side by the Southampton striker that would have won over the Chelsea bench. Again Hasenhuttl’s men lobbed the ball into Chelsea’s right where Perrad found Adam Armstrong with time for a touch before his finish.
Tuchel would later offload Azpilicueta as well as Jorginho and Havertz. He blamed the mentality of his players for “soft goals” and many other thingsBut it will be his job to sort it out and he will need people who are fit to believe in their manager as well.
Southampton 2-1 Chelsea: As it happened
It is not enough to get good words after the game but not the points, today we had to face the situation when it came to the score.

Even when we were 1-0 down I didn’t feel we were struggling. You deserve so much from this effort.
A special force?
Yes. I said from day one that we realize we have a team that is young but has plenty of hard disk space and can learn. They enjoy working hard, they enjoy running and they enjoy scoring goals when the moment comes.Southampton vs Chelsea live
“We’ve won once at Chelsea since I’ve been here, that was four years ago but not long at home and it was time to get something.”
On Romeo Lavia..
The downside is that he’s probably been injured for a few weeks now, so he’s not perfect. We started well in almost all the games but obviously we are struggling with our focus and consistency in the matches. We struggled to find answers and find a way back if things didn’t go our way. Things went our way today but then we struggled after the equaliser.Southampton vs Chelsea highlights today
Chelsea’s performance so far this season…
I don’t know if concern is the right word. I absolutely hate losing, it’s the second time this season and I don’t think it takes long to beat us and I don’t like it.
We try to win matches and the way we do that we need to understand as soon as possible. I also don’t understand why we are in this situation with all the midfield injuries.
I think in the first 20 minutes we created half the chances but struggled to score. It’s not new to us and it doesn’t necessarily mean you can lose a match, you can win 1-0. Romeo Lavia of Southampton
Bouncing back from a weekend defeat is an amazing feeling. I haven’t scored in a long time, so how does it feel to score here at home and in front of my family.Chelsea vs Southampton today
I’ll be honest I don’t really score like that in training but today was my lucky day, it went in.
We don’t stop, it’s about team spirit, we always communicate and tell each other to keep going till the end. We are building a great core in the team, we keep building.”
Southampton hit back in the first half to upset a sluggish Chelsea.
Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong condemned Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat as Southampton leapfrogged the feeble Blues in the Premier League.

Teenage midfielder Lavia became the first player born in 2004 to score in the Premier League with a fine strike at St Mary’s Stadium, before Armstrong broke a 22-game duck as Saints stunned Chelsea.
The visitors grabbed Raheem Sterling’s third goal in two games, only for Southampton to turn the game on its head on a difficult night for Thomas Tuchel’s side.Chelsea vs Southampton prediction
Chelsea could be a team with more big names and big money coming in quickly thanks to new owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. But the top-four-chasing Blues should still have no business losing such a clash against a retooled and young, but admittedly tough, Southampton.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s rejuvenated Saints jumped ahead of Chelsea to seventh in the table, with a big win for the south coast men.
