Serena Williams Takes the Court For the First Match of her Last U.S Open

Williams will face Danka Kuvenik at Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows in New York City – the site of Williams’ first US Open win in 1999, when she was 17.
Earlier this month, Williams, now 40, announced her plans to retire from tennis after a decades-long career in which she dominated the women’s game and won 23 grands. Slam singles titles included.

Meadowlark Media sports commentator Howard Bryant told Weekend Edition that Williams has only played four matches this year and won just one.
“She’s really, maybe for the first time in her life, an underdog to win the U.S. Open,” Bryant said. “But boy, what a magical fairy tale if she can come to New York and do some magic.”
After retiring from tennis, Williams would continue her pioneering approach.

It took her a while to get going, but Serena Williams eased back a bit and produced her signature round of a 6-3, 6-3 win over Danka Kovinc to advance to the second round of the US Open.
