Description
What is Facebook Instant Articles?
Instant Articles is a Facebook feature that allows you to load your content ten times faster using an optimized mobile format. It is based on the same technology used in the Facebook app for mobile devices.
Instant articles load 10 times faster than a standard web page. This amazing increase in speed will provide a better user experience for mobile users.
Many popular media sites such as Buzzfeed, TechCrunch, Mashable and countless others use it on their websites. With the Lightning Bolt icon you can easily view instant articles in your Facebook feed.
How to create instant articles
Step 1: Sign up
The first thing you need to do to get up and run is sign up to join the program. You can do this at Instantarticles.fb.com.
Step 2: Select your Facebook page
After signing up, you will be given the opportunity to choose which page you want to activate the text for:
Step 3: Claim your URL
After you select your Facebook page, you will be asked to provide the URL you would like to use for the articles. This URL works based on the URLs of all your posts (and, in most cases, your blog URL, for example, buffer.com/library).
To claim your URL, you need to add a meta tag to the <head> title of your HTML, and then add the URL to your settings. All the information you need to do this can be found in the Instant Articles settings:
Step 4: Create articles
In a test, Facebook found that publishers want a tool to publish articles on the web, mobile app or other places where readers can view their content. Also, reports are printed directly from your content management system- there is no need to recreate articles on Facebook.
Publishing tools
With the WordPress plugin, Facebook has teamed up with multiple publishing platforms to create seamless integration with instant articles.
Publishing tools include integration with:
Drupal, Atavist, Medium, Perk Distributed, Rebelmouse, Sherdis, Sovereign, Stellar, Tempest. Get complete information here.
RSS feed
If you do not use WordPress or other CMS supported by Facebook Publishing Tools, you can link your content to Facebook via the RSS feed.
New posts are automatically syndicated as instant articles every time you publish, and RSS feeds are seamlessly integrated with Facebook.
To enable publication from the RSS feed, you need to configure your content management system to create a new RSS feed that contains the full content of each article in the instant article markup (link is needed to assist you in formatting the feed). Developer may be required).
A guide to formatting RSS feeds in Instant Articles Markup can be found here.
API
The API allows you to create, publish, update and delete instant articles directly from your content management system and provides an excellent alternative for connecting via RSS.
A guide to using the Instant Articles API can be found here.
Step 5: Customize the style
Facebook gives you the option to customize the style of your articles during setup; Here, you can upload a logo and choose which fonts to use in your articles. Font options are currently limited to Helvetica New and Georgia font families.

Step 6: Submit for review
After completing the above steps, you can submit your feed for review by Facebook to verify that all articles created from your website are properly formatted.
Facebook currently aims to review all submissions within 24-48 hours.

What do you need to do to enable Facebook Instant Articles in WordPress?
There are a few requirements for setting up Facebook instant articles on your WordPress site. It helps if you have one:
Facebook page for your WordPress website.
Facebook Pages App (we will show you later in this article how to make it).
At least ten or more articles on your website.
Instant articles for the WP plugin (in this article we will show you how to set it up).
Let’s start by applying for Facebook instant articles.
Signing up for facebook instant articles
First, you need to visit the Facebook Instant Articles website and click on the signup button to get started.
Sign up for Facebook instant articles
Facebook will now ask you to select a page. Here you need to select the Facebook page for your website.
After that, check the box to accept the Instant Articles Terms, and then click on the ‘Access Instant Articles Tool’ button.
Select your Facebook page
This will take you to the Publisher Tools on your Facebook page, which now has a quick articles section.
First, you need to prove your website ownership by claiming your URL.
Claim your website URL
Scroll down a bit to the Tools section of the page and click ‘Claim your URL’ to expand it. Facebook will show you the code snippet.
Meta tag to claim URL ownership
You need to copy the code and place it in the <head> section of your WordPress site.
You can add this code to your website in two ways.
You can edit the header.php file in your child theme and paste the code before the <head> tag.
But if you do not use the child theme, you can use the Insert Header and Footers plugin. For more details, see our step-by-step guide on how to install the WordPress plugin.
After activating the plugin, go to the Settings »Insert Header and Footer page and paste the code into the Headers section.
Put the code in your header section
Click the Save button to save your changes.
After you add the code to your website, you need to go back to the Publisher Tools section on your Facebook page.
Add your website URL under the code you previously copied, and then click the Claim URL button.
URL claim success
The next step is to add an instant articles RSS feed to your website. Here’s how you can create an instant article for your WordPress site.
Install and activate Instant Articles for WP Plugin. Once activated, the plugin will generate an instant article for your WordPress site.
You can find feeds by adding / feeds / instant-article after your site’s URL:
http://www.example.com/feed/instant-articles
Copy the feed URL of your Instant Articles and go back to the Publishing Tools section of your Facebook page. Scroll down to the Tools section and click on ‘Production RSS Feeds’ to expand it.
Add instant articles feed
Paste the feed URL of your Instant Articles and click the Save button. Facebook will show you a successful message that your feed has been added.
Setting up the Facebook Instant Articles plugin for WordPress

Once activated, you will notice that the plugin has added a new menu item to your WordPress admin bar labeled ‘Quick Articles’. Clicking on it will take you to the plugin settings page.

This plugin requires an App ID and a secret key for activation. You need to create a Facebook app for your page to get those keys. Let’s see how you can do this.
Creating a Facebook app for your page
First go to the Facebook for Developers website. Click the drop-down menu next to your profile picture next to the My Apps menu in the upper right corner of the screen.
Create a new Facebook app
This will bring up a popup on the screen. Click on the website.

This will take you to the Quick Setup Wizard. You need to enter a name for your Facebook app. It could be anything that helps you locate the app.
Click on the ‘Create New Facebook App ID’ button to continue.
Enter a name for your FB app
A new popup will appear, asking you to provide a contact email address and select a category for your app.
Enter the email address and select Apps for the page as App category.
Provide email and select a category for the app
Click on the Create App ID button to continue.
The popup will disappear and Facebook will now create an app for you. On the quick start page, you will see new information on how to use the app.
You need to scroll down a bit to the ‘Tell me about your website’ section.
Add your website URL
Enter your WordPress website address here and click on the Next button to continue.
Although there are more steps in the setup wizard that Facebook shows you, that’s all the information you need to enter.

Your WordPress site is now ready for instant articles. There are still two feet left.

Instant articles style optimized for your website
Please scroll down to the Tools section and click on the Styles tab to expand it. Facebook has already added a default style for your website.

Submit your Instant Articles feed for review
Before submitting your Instant Articles feed for review, you should make sure that your Instant Articles contain at least ten articles.
If you have already published more than ten articles on your website, but the feed does not show them all, you need to edit your last ten articles and click the Update button.
Once you have confirmed that there are ten articles in your Instant Articles feed, you are ready to submit them to Facebook for review.
Go to your Facebook page and click on Publishing Tools from the admin bar. After that, click on the ‘Configuration’ link under Instant Articles in your left-hand menu.
See ‘Step 2: Submit for Review’ on the Configuration Settings page.
Submit for review
If there are no errors in your Instant Articles feed, you will see a ‘Submit for Review’ button. Continue sending your feed for review and click this button.
That’s it; Instant articles will be available to your website after the Facebook team reviews and approves your feed.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Facebook needs to match your instant articles with the specifications described on their developer website. Instant Articles for WP Plugin will handle that part for you.
However, depending on the theme or plugin you are using on your site, you may see some errors or warnings. The easiest way to fix those errors is to edit the post and scroll down to the Facebook Instant Articles meta box at the bottom of the post editor.
Instant articles for warnings
Adding content to your posts by plugins or themes that do not support the Transformer rules used by Instant Articles for the WP Plugin can cause many errors.
You can create your own custom transformer rules. See the plugin documentation to learn how to add your custom transformer rules.
However, we think most beginners find it difficult to do on their own, so you may need a developer. You can try to configure your other plugins and themes and prevent them from adding content blocks to your posts.
Wrong URL
If you constantly get an empty feed error while submitting your Instant Articles feed, check the URL you are trying to add.
http://www.example.com/feed/instant-articles
http://example.com/feed/instant-articles
These are two different URLs and depending on your WordPress setup, entering the wrong URL can lead to a 404 error.
If you still see an empty feed error, try updating the last ten posts on your site. It changes their modified times and adds them to the feed.
